About
the Program
Starting in 1999, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Political Science Sean Cridland has offered summer semester program which study the political and philosophical aspects of Tibetan Buddhism through academic research and cultural immersion. Each course of study involves reading a selection of texts designed to illuminate the uniqueness of the Tibetan worldview and situation, combined with travel to temples and shrines, and trekking into the high mountains where these worldviews originated as a hybrid of Mahayana Buddhism, Bon religion, and other local customs.
We have trekked around the Annapurna Circuit and the Everest Region in Nepal and the Sikkim Himalaya of India, studied the historical sites found in Kathmandu, driven across Tibet stopping to visit the shrines and monasteries in Gyantse, Shigatse, and Lhasa and spent time in the current home of HH the 14th Dalai Lama, Dharamsala India. In the spring of 2002 we will offer an amazing opportunity to learn about, visit, and experience Tibetan culture, philosophy, and politics as it exists in the early 21st century when we have the rare opportunity to visit Dharamsala Ladakh, India. On the way to visiting these amazing regions, we'll take the opportunity to see the quintessential Indian landmark: the Taj Mahal. Stay tuned to this page for further developments in the planning of our 2002 semester abroad. We'll be updating regularly as things progress.
